On June 8, 2012 at 7:30 PM, the campus version of classic Broadway musical Guys and Dolls hit the stage at CMA’s 1,500 square meter studio theatre.
The new version was co-produced by Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA), Beijing Contemporary Music Academy (CMA), and Art & Culture College of Tianjin University of Sports (ACCTUS).
It was played with live music accompaniment by a Jazz orchestra composed of students from CMA and ACCTUS. The orchestra and student actors/actresses of STA perfectly collaborated, providing a wonderful gala performance to audiences. What’s the most highlighted in the new version was that it ambitiously attempted live accompaniment by Jazz orchestra instead of accompaniment CD as used to be, and set the orchestra on the stage, which broke the traditional practice that the musicians are limited to the orchestra pit. Additionally, it is the first domestic attempt to co-produce a musical by inter-college cooperation on the basis of sharing resources and complementing advantages with each other. This promotes the exchange and development in musical teaching between CMA, STA, and ACCTUS, explores new inter-college cooperation form, and offers new ideas to the development and education of China’s musicals.
